PETER & ELIZABETH WOODEN(G)
The November 10, 1698 deed to Philip and Martha's Beverly residence describes their parcel as bounded "...Southeasterly by the land of Peter Wooden and the townes Common...".
Peter was born in Rowley, March 13, 1673/4,
the youngest of John and Mary Wooden's 9 children.
He and Elizabeth (Mallett) were married October 15, 1696 by Rev. Hale in Beverly. All 5 girls were baptised in the first parish; Elizabeth in 1697, Mary in 1700, Sarah in 1703, Lidia in 1705 and Bethia in 1711. The Woodens conveyed their parcel to Jonathan Rayment, who was Peter's brother-in-law through his sister Martha, and Johnathan resold it to the Dikes in 1705. |

Peter was a sailor aboard the ketch, Benjamin, when it was ransomed from royal authorities off Portugal in 1702, spoiling Capt. Ellis' trading venture. Queen Anne's War in the colonies and the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe made a mariner's life even more dangerous. Elizabeth was a daughter of Hosea and Grace Mellot, born in Boston, April 19. 1678. That she was devout is evident by her special care to transfer her church membership when she moved to Beverly, where it is recorded as, "26. 12. 1698, Elizabeth wife... owned Gods Covenent & subjected to this church", and she was received to full communion Janurary 25, 1701/02. Hosea had died and Grace remarried, March 15, 1691/92 to Benjamin Balch(2), son of John Balch of Beverly, and they had two daughters, Deborah(16) in 1693 and Lydia(17) in 1695. The house where they raised those children still stands, one of the oldest in North America, and is now a museum, open to the public. The family moved to Rochester in Plymouth Co. where they had a son, Hosea in 1713, where Lidiah (1723/4) and Bethia(1730/31) married. and Peter died, May 17, 1717. |
